A sua experi\u00eancia cient\u00edfica combina ensaios em estruturas e modela\u00e7\u00e3o num\u00e9rica do comportamento n\u00e3o-linear de sistemas estruturais. Os seus principais interesses de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o incluem: avalia\u00e7\u00e3o, reabilita\u00e7\u00e3o e refor\u00e7o de estruturas, ensaios em estruturas, simula\u00e7\u00e3o do comportamento de estruturas, risco s\u00edsmico, monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o de estruturas, reabilita\u00e7\u00e3o e refor\u00e7o s\u00edsmico de constru\u00e7\u00f5es em terra.<\/p><p>Desde maio de 2015, \u00e9 membro da Dire\u00e7\u00e3o do Instituto da Constru\u00e7\u00e3o, da Universidade do Porto. \u00c9 membro do Comit\u00e9 Nacional do ICOMOS (Council on Monuments and Sites), desde 2009, e Expert Member do ISCEAH (International Scientific Committee of Earthen Architectural Heritage), desde 2011. \u00c9 membro da Rede Ibero-Americana PROTERRA, desde 2012. Deve ser dada aten\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 avalia\u00e7\u00e3o da vulnerabilidade s\u00edsmica deste vasto patrim\u00f3nio e ao desenvolvimento de solu\u00e7\u00f5es de refor\u00e7o adequadas.<\/p><p>Relat\u00f3rios recentes de observa\u00e7\u00e3o de danos p\u00f3s-sismo unanimamente reconhecem que aspetos como as irregularidades estruturais, em planta e em altura, os detalhes de pormenriza\u00e7\u00e3o das armaduras nos elementos de bet\u00e3o armado, assim como a intera\u00e7\u00e3o com elementos n\u00e3o estruturais, em particular as paredes de alvenaria de enchimento com o sistema estrutural desempenham um papel muito importante na resposta e seguran\u00e7a s\u00edsmica dos edif\u00edcios de bet\u00e3o armado.<\/p><p>Nesta linha, tem-se observado nos \u00faltimos anos um interesse crescente no estudo do comportamento s\u00edsmico das paredes de alvenaria de enchimento e da sua influ\u00eancia na resposta dos edif\u00edcios quando \u00e9 sujeito a uma a\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00edsmica. Reconhece-se que a sua influ\u00eancia pode ser favor\u00e1vel ou desfavor\u00e1vel \u00e0 seguran\u00e7a estrutural, dependendo de uma s\u00e9rie de fatores, tais como a sua distribui\u00e7\u00e3o em planta e em altura, exist\u00eancia ou n\u00e3o de liga\u00e7\u00e3o mec\u00e2nica aos elementos de bet\u00e3o armado envolventes, rigidez relativa entre o painel e os elementos de bet\u00e3o armado, condi\u00e7\u00f5es-fronteira, propriedades materiais e mec\u00e2nicas, entre outras.<\/p><p>Nesta interven\u00e7\u00e3o ser\u00e3o apresentados, de forma sum\u00e1ria, as principais causas de dano severo e colapso de estruturas de edif\u00edcios em bet\u00e3o armado observadas em sismos recentes, dando particular aten\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0s defici\u00eancias do comportamento estrutural decorrentes da influ\u00eancia dos pain\u00e9is de alvenaria e aos problemas relacionados com mecanismos de rotura por corte dos elementos estruturais. Ser\u00e1 tamb\u00e9m apresentada uma campanha de ensaios, realizada \u00e0 escala real, visando a avalia\u00e7\u00e3o do comportamento de paredes de enchimento sujeitas a a\u00e7\u00f5es para fora-do-plano e a valida\u00e7\u00e3o da efici\u00eancia de solu\u00e7\u00f5es de refor\u00e7o recorrendo ao reboco armado. Complementarmente, ser\u00e3o apresentados os resultados principais de estudos num\u00e9ricos que real\u00e7am a influ\u00eancia das paredes de alvenaria de enchimento na resposta s\u00edsmica de edif\u00edcios de bet\u00e3o armado. Por fim, ser\u00e1 apresentada uma campanha de ensaios sob pilares de bet\u00e3o armado n\u00e3o dimensionados de acordo com regulamenta\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00edsmica, sujeitos \u00e0 flex\u00e3o uniaxial e biaxial.
